PATA's Strategic Information Centre Issues Paper in Respose to 911 Attacks
INFORMATION
PATA's Strategic Information Centre (SIC) has commissioned a paper in response
to the September 11 attacks. The paper will include an analysis of the current
situation, three scenarios for the future and, most importantly, the strategic
implications the recent events will have for the travel industry. The paper,
expected to be completed by October 15, will be updated monthly or as events
ensue PATA's SIC has obtained rights to reproduce Dr. David Beirman's paper,
"World Tourism Under Siege," as PATA Occasional Paper No. 26.
The paper
reviews models and real life examples of destination crisis marketing, highlighting
the critical elements of successful campaigns. An Information clearinghouse
has been added to the Members Only section of the PATA website. Log on to www.pata.org
for access to the above papers and other information on crisis communications,
economic analysis, research briefings, position papers, case studies, and news
of relevant industry forums and events. We invite all PATA members to
submit information for posting to communications@pata.th.com.
PROGRAMS
The PATA Americas Division is organizing an industry forum
scheduled for late November to discuss cooperative programs to help encourage
travel to and from North America in 2002. The meeting will focus on co-op campaigns
and ways that PATA might be able to assist in facilitating joint efforts to
benefit the membership.
PATA's "See
You in Pacific Asia" consumer marketing campaign is
set to launch this fall and continue throughout 2002. In a cooperative program
with MasterCard, participating members receive significant advertising discounts
and are highlighted throughout the campaign. Air India, Air New Zealand and
Cathay Pacific are already participating in this program. The October editions
of National Geographic Traveler and Travel Holiday feature "See You in
Asia Pacific" supplements, and Sunset
Magazine is running a full page advertisement on the program in its
October issue.
STATEMENTS
The PATA Carrier group met during the PATA Board meeting on September 21 in
Taipei, and made this joint statement to the Board: "The carrier group
expresses its condolences and support to the U.S. airlines involved in the attacks
and to the helpless victims. Of vital importance now are the actions taken for
the safety and security of airline passengers. We feel that along with the carriers,
respective governments
should be involved in ensuring air travel security."
The following joint statement was issued by the World Travel and Tourism Council,
PATA and other tourism organisations: "We call upon governments to immediately
tighten international safety and security measures and to help restore consumer
confidence in travel and tourism. Our coalition is equally committed to these
two courses of action and stands ready to work in partnership with governments
around the world to achieve these aims."
